The quotient of powers rule states that when dividing two powers with the same base, just subtract the exponents. Remember that the quotient rule begins with the bottom function and ends with the bottom function squared. For example: f(x)/g(x) X 2 /x The Quotient Rule is one of the major principles used in Differential Calculus ( or Calculus I ). When raising an exponential expression to a new power, multiply the exponents. What is an exponent; Exponents rules; Exponents calculator; What is an exponent. In this case, unlike the product rule examples, a couple of these functions will require the quotient rule in order to get the derivative. Example: Simplify: (7a 4 b 6) 2. There is a formula we can use to differentiate a quotient - it is called thequotientrule. Example \(\PageIndex{11}\): Using the Extended Power Rule and the Constant Multiple Rule. In this process, we subtract the values of the exponents, keep the original base, and eliminate the fraction line. 10 5 = 10×10×10×10×10. For example, raising 2 to the power of 3 gives 8: = The logarithm of base b is the inverse operation, that provides the output y from the input x .
