black hole thermodynamics book

Thus, in this final chapter we will only concern ourselves with black hole radiation, black hole thermodynamics, and the information problem following [7, 10-12]. The larger black hole, represented by the branch with r > r0 , has positive specific heat and is thermodynamically stable. Do black holes violate the second law of thermodynamics ... PDF Introductory Lectures on Black Hole Thermodynamics # black hole (& more generally horizon) thermodynamics as a possible guiding light # construction of model discrete substitutes for quantum field theory, with irregular microtopology flexible enough to allow creation of degrees of freedom (as in cosmological expansion). In this chapter I will review the discovery of black hole thermodynamics and summarize the many independent ways of obtaining the thermodynamic and (perhaps) statistical mechanical . In the second part, intrinsic properties of quantum mechanics are shown, which justify the Boltzmann formula to yield a unique entropy in . On the thermodynamic side, it describes how new developments allowed the inclusion of pressure/volume terms in the first law, leading to a new understanding of black holes as chemical . In this chapter I will review the discovery of black hole thermodynamics and summarize the many independent ways of obtaining the thermodynamic and (perhaps) statistical mechanical . It motivates scores of proposals in the field, from the thought that the world is a hologram to calculations in string theory. This result allows black holes to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics and thus be consistent with the rest of physics. Black hole thermodynamics (BHT) is regarded as one of the deepest clues we have to a quantum theory of gravity. 1.1.4 General references A few references for general relativity, black holes, and classical and quantum black hole thermodynamics: S.W. Sadly, a former tutor in JPU200Y was completely correct when he proposed the following multiple choice question for a test: Eddie Gonzales Jr. - MessageToEagle.com - In 1969, English physicist Roger Penrose discovered a property which would later allow for a long-awaited link between thermodynamics, and the far stranger mechanics of black holes. The discovery in the early 1970s that black holes radiate as black bodies has radically affected our understanding of general relativity, and offered us some early hints about the nature of quantum gravity. HISTORY OF BLACK HOLES • • • • • • Geologist John Mitchell put forward the idea of a body so massive that even light could not escape. S = kc 3 4ℏG A. The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy or black hole entropy is the amount of entropy that must be assigned to a black hole in order for it to comply with the laws of thermodynamics as they are interpreted by observers external to that black hole. This is particularly true for the first and second laws. Black holes, predicted by Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity more than a century ago, have long intrigued scientists and the public with their bizarre and fantastical properties. Including black holes in the scheme of thermodynamics has disclosed a deep‐seated connection between gravitation, heat and the quantum that may lead us to a synthesis of the corresponding branches of physics. We consider here one of Stephen Hawking's contributions to Physics. Answer (1 of 6): Black-holes do NOT violate the second law of thermodynamics; but black-holes do introduce new aspects about how these laws work. analyze in detail how black holes can behave as information mirrors in one theorized resolution to the BHIP, as shown in [1]. Black hole entropy is a concept with geometric root but with many physical consequences. It can only increase or stay the same. This book reflects the resurgence of interest in the quantum properties of black holes, culminating most recently in controversial discussions about firewalls. The advantage of black hole thermodynamics is that provides a way to get a handle on the complex interactions black holes can have. John Dougherty & Craig Callender. The horizon area theorem [Stephen Hawking] 1970: Stephen Hawking uses the theory of general relativity to derive the so-called Horizon area theorem The total horizon area in a closed system containing black holes never decreases. However, with a negative cosmological constant, there are non-trivial black hole solutions, found by Banados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli. In these last years Black hole Physics has developed rapidly both from theoretical and observational aspects: especially as regards quantum aspects many things must be clarified as for instance the processes occuring near mini black holes with spontaneous creation of particles that eventually lead to the evaporation of black hole. Black Holes and Thermodynamics Stationary black hole ↔Body in thermal equilibrium Consider an ordinary system composed of a large number of particles, such as the gas in a box. Black Hole Information and Thermodynamics book. (19) below) must be constant over the event horizon of the black hole. Thermodynamic black holes have not just mass, charge and . It then presents black hole solutions, and discusses Penrose diagrams, black hole thermodynamics and entropy, the Unruh effect, Hawking radiation, the black hole information problem, black holes in supergravity and string theory, the black hole microstate . In order to connect with black hole thermodynamics, we realize that the photons emitted via Hawking radiation present energies of the order of the black hole's temperature E ∼ T, . Countless lightyears far away, at the galactic core. Its first part is devoted to local strong field configurations (black holes and wormholes) in general relativity and the most . The logarithm of this number can be regarded as the entropy of the black hole and is a measure of the amount of information about the initial state which . Jacob D. Bekenstein. Hawking and G.F.R. It motivates scores of proposals in the field, from the thought that the world is a hologram to calculations in string theory. He begins with a treatment of the ordinary one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator, progresses through the construction of quantum field theory in flat spacetime to possible constructions of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, and, ultimately, to an . BASIC THEORY The fundamental thermodynamic relation, which contains all the information about the thermodynamic state of black hole matter, has been given by Smarr (I973) M2= 1(A/4) + (4t/A) (J2 + -Q4) + 1Q2, (2.1) where J and Q are the angular momentum and electric charge on the black hole .
