A Brief History of Time (1988) is a book written by the scientist and mathematician Stephen Hawking. The subject of the book is cosmology, the story of the universe.. It also predicted that time would come to an end in black holes. To understand how black holes can form, we first need to understand the life cycle of a star. The General Theory of Relativity and the discovery of the expansion of the universe shattered the old picture of an ever existing and ever lasting universe. Imagine sitting in a room . For Hawking, therefore, the beginning of the universe is best described by a Euclidean approach. Source. No matter how many times the results of experiments agree with some theory, you can never be sure that the next time the result will not contradict the theory. Thus, if light cannot escape, neither can anything else. This came only in 1915, when Einstein put forward the General Theory of Relativity.

Imaginary time is where the usual time dimension undergoes a Wick rotation (a phase rotation) 1 so that its coordinates are multiplied by the imaginary . In the 1960s, Hawking and the Oxford University physicist Roger Penrose proved that when space-time bends steeply enough, such as inside a black hole or perhaps during the Big Bang, it inevitably collapses, curving infinitely steeply toward a singularity, where Einstein's equations break down and a new, quantum theory of gravity is needed. However, he did believe that time travel to the future .

Any physical theory is always provisional, in the sense that it is only a hypothesis: you can never prove it. Stephen Hawking, Roger Penrose. So instead we (Stephen Hawking and his Colleagues) have progressed by finding partial theories. Hawking showed that according to general relativity, Einstein's theory of gravity, there is a moment back in time where all light rays converge to a point. Hawking and Hertog developed a variation of this concept of holography to project out the time dimension in eternal inflation. Along with scientist James Hartle, Hawking put forth an idea of what happened before the Big Bang..
