is gravity a force or curvature of spacetime

1 If you pick up any general physics textbook, you will find that gravity is called a force early in the book and subsequently treated as a force throughout the book. We're now almost ready to understand that. The concept of "gravity" is then that objects are falling along the bending of spacetime. Answer (1 of 16): Is gravity a curvature in space-time, a force, or a wave? . Gravity might have been the first . Brian Greene explains. But why is gravity even considered as a force if it is experienced due to the curvature of spacetime. Let's walk through the argument. In the theory of general relativity, gravity is a phenomenon of the space-time curvature potential of a local region. two parallel lines on a positively curved surface will tend to come together as if attracted to each other by a force ( however all fictitious forces that I know of are frame dependant, and there is no alternate frame for space-time curvature ). Is Gravity a Quantum Force? To achieve the Theory of Everything we need to unify all the fundamental forces, one of which being Gravity. Acceleration is based on either the sum of all the net forces (Newton) acting on an object, or the net curvature of spacetime (Einstein) at one particular location in the Universe. . If newtonian view of gravity tells you'll survive,You will.GR doesn't change the result. It just improves the precision while also explaining phenomenas I mentioned above, which the earlier theory couldn't. Isn't it a fictitious force? Adapted from a NIST news release.. Einstein's theory of general relativity, which describes gravity as a curvature of space-time, explains a multitude of gravitational phenomena. A Canadian Newspaper even had an article on this whole issue once. In Einstein's Theory of General Relativity gravity isn't considered as force but as the curvature of the fabric of pace time. 16. I told you gravity isn't a force, but looks like one. Where, m1 & m2 are mass of the objects and r is the distance between them. Physics. centrifugal force) you feel, when you turn a speedy car on road. The more massive . Because although impe. Most of the gravity that we experience here on earth when we see objects falling to the ground is of this type, which we might call "relative gravity". The spacetime curvature around any massive object is . That is true for no other force. . That curvature is dynamical, moving as those objects move. Abstract. But that theory falls apart within the tiniest of volumes - the center of a black hole or the universe at its explosive birth, when it was smaller than the diameter of an atom. Gravity is ACTUALLY the curvature of spacetime but it does little help in knowing if a ball thrown at you from 50ft will kill you or not. Assuming that spacetime curvature is not a force, then gravity cannot be both a force and spacetime curvature. • What is a black hole? In 1915, Einstein discovered the General Theory of Relativity. The curvature of spacetime influences the motion of massive bodies within it; in turn, as massive bodies move in spacetime, the curvature changes and the geometry of spacetime is in constant evolution. But neither is right or wrong. • Time runs more slowly at lower altitudes in a Gravity and the curvature of spacetime. Archived. Einsteinian picture, spacetime is a single, unified structure where the three dimensions of space and the one dimension of time are inextricably linked. You say, Gravity is not a pure force since its just curvature in space time. (2) Einstein and his followers assert that when energy-momentum tensor = 0 there is present a material source (e.g . The presence of mass, which we typically think of as gravity, distorts distance and time nearby. Einstein (General relativity) - gravity is not a force but the curvature of space time caused by the presence of mass (also energy but lets keep it simple in this context) where objects follow this curvature resulting the appearance of attraction. It has a nice geometrical interpretation, but it's a field nevertheless (remember, a field is something with a value at each point of spacetime, and the curvature of spacetime surely fulfills that). First consider two particles "side by side" in a gravitational If gravity technically isn't a real force, then why can it perform work? For certain 'classical . It is the mass of objects that bends space-time and that bending what we simply call 'Gravity' (a fictional force). We can see that the force is inversely proportional to the distance between the objects and it reduces . Is Gravity a Quantum Force? Acceleration is based on either the sum of all the net forces (Newton) acting on an object, or the net curvature of spacetime (Einstein) at one particular location in the Universe. Just like a pseudo force (e.g. So anything that moves forward in time will find its trajectory pointing down slightly. . Gravity emerges from this curvature of spacetime. Video source: World Science Festival / YouTube. Thus far we have only considered uniform gravitational fields. By giving the 3-D and 1-D mass . The curvature of spacetime (not just space) is responsible for gravity. Posted by 2 years ago. The apple moving first only in the time direction (i.e. By giving the 3-D and 1-D mass . So the aforementioned scientists who tell us that gravity is a force are wrong, unless they are denying general relativity and Newton had it right after all. C. Newton's theory of gravity is an approximation to general relativity that works when gravity is relatively weak, but breaks down when gravity . The maths behind spacetime, can be used to predict the motion of an object that is moving in a gravitational field. But that theory falls apart within the tiniest of volumes - the center of a black hole or the universe at its explosive birth, when it was smaller than the diameter of an . This book is aimed at non-specialists. Most of the gravity that we experience here on earth when we see objects falling to the ground is of this type, which we might call "relative gravity". According to Einstein, everything that is not the gravitational field is matter. or complex space-time . Gravity is the curvature of the universe, caused by massive bodies, which determines the path that objects travel. Answer: Air pressure, and shape of the projectile, and your force, angle of the toss each time. Despite flat-earthers' glee in pronouncing the death of gravity as a force, reports of gravity's death have been greatly exaggerated. • Spacetime becomes highly curved around a large mass compressed into a tiny space. For example, an electric field will accelerate positive and negative charges in opposite directions. Instead, it is something quite different — a curvature in the fabric of space-time. Thinking of it as the latter is generally preferred because gravity, in theory, affects everything equivalently so the nicest model is to have it part of space itself rather than a universal force. The Quran used the term "weighs ثَقُلَتْ " which means by gravity. If you want to read more about some of these ideas, you might try Space, Time, and Gravity, by Robert Wald (University of Chicago Press, 1992). The remainder of gravity, "intrinsic gravity", if you will, manifests itself in tidal forces, and is associated with a specific property of geometry: The curvature of spacetime. Gravity is solely based on space-time curvature and could even be considered fictitious, i.e. Quran 21:104. If gravity is actually curved space and if falling objects are simply following the natural curves of space why does each object have its own curve? B. Newton's theory of gravity and general relativity give the same answers, but the former tells us to think of gravity as a force and the latter tells us to think of gravity as curvature of spacetime. It is also, equivalently, a curvature of space time. Theorists believe that both of these descriptions are valid, in much the same way that we can think of the force of electromagnetism as being either the product of a continuous field, or the exchange of numerous force-carrying particles called photons. Video source: World Science Festival / YouTube. But from General Relativity we know that gravity is curvature of spacetime. According to current theories, Gravity really doesn't exist! (Credit: Simca Bouma/UC Berkeley) Einstein's theory of general relativity, which describes gravity as a curvature of space-time, explains a multitude of gravitational phenomena. The situation is . Just the idea of four-dimensional space-time causes most of us to shudder…. And we can see how the orbit would be a shorter path. We "feel" the force of gravity only because we are perched upon a surface that gives us weight. In short, Yes. This dynamics incorporates the influence of potential energy on spacetime in Newtonian dynamics and, unlike Einstein's General Relativity, treats gravity as a force without the need to curve . In this essay, we propose a semi-classical approach to support the interaction force nature of gravity as opposed to its curved geometrical nature. We call this an Embedding Diagram. In short, Yes. Spacetime in gravitation field is curved, so the time axis (in simple terms) is no longer orthogonal to the space axes. Paul, The force of gravity causes all objects to undergo the same acceleration (at the same point in spacetime, of course): that was the point of Galileo's famous experiments (whether or not he really did it off the Leaning Tower of Pisa!). "The one sentence statement of general relativity is that 'gravity is the curvature of spacetime,'" explains Dr. Sean Carroll, assistant professor of physics at the University of Chicago. The most accurate description of gravity is Einstein's general relativity. 1. The theory predicts that anything moving through a gravitational field undisturbed by other forces will follow a curved path . It is a complete description of gravity as a warping of four-dimensional spacetime. In nature, gravitational "force" varies from point to point and so the acceleration due to this force is not uniform. Answer (1 of 10): It is neither, gravity as presented in schoolbooks is the result of philosophizing, not reasoning and experiencing and experimenting. Image source: T. Pyle / Caltech / MIT / LIGO Lab. This tensor is called the curvature or Riemann tensor and it is de ned in terms of the metric and its rst and second derivatives. • Around a black hole, spacetime becomes so curved that nothing can escape. would instantaneously attract one another via a mutual force known as . Einstein's theory of general relativity, which describes gravity as a curvature of space-time, explains a multitude of gravitational phenomena. Brian Greene explains. As defined by newton, gravity is an attractive force which acts between two objects and this force is given by F=Gm1m2/r^2.
