Such striking arms are a hallmark of so-called grand-design spiral galaxies. The possible exoplanet was discovered in the Whirlpool Galaxy, the spiral galaxy Messier 51 (M51), by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, NASA said in a press release on Monday. If confirmed, it will be the first time a planet has been detected outside the Milky Way. Astronomers have found evidence for a possible planet candidate in the M51 ("Whirlpool") galaxy, potentially representing what would be the first planet seen to transit a star outside of the Milky Way. The possible exoplanet was discovered in the Whirlpool Galaxy, the spiral galaxy Messier 51 (M51), by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, NASA said in a press release on Monday. While 4,800 exoplanets (those that orbit stars other than our Sun) have been found in our own Milky Way Galaxy, this is the first time an extra-galactic planet - or extroplanet - has been found. Astronomers have found evidence for a possible planet candidate in the M51 ("Whirlpool") galaxy, representing what could be the first planet detected outside of the Milky Way. After a painstaking research effort combing through thousands of signals, a team led by Rosanne Di Stefano of the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has determined that a huge dip in X-ray light from the Whirlpool Galaxy is best explained by an extragalactic planet. The dip occurred in X-ray binary M51-ULS-1 and completely blocked the signal for a few .
