A possible Saturn-sized planet identified in the distant Whirlpool Galaxy could be the first exoplanet to be detected outside the Milky Way. Messier 51 (The Whirlpool Galaxy) The graceful, winding arms of the majestic spiral galaxy M51 appear like a grand spiral staircase sweeping through space. The Whirlpool galaxy’s beautiful face-on view and closeness to Earth allow astronomers to study a classic spiral galaxy’s structure and star-forming processes. For more information about Hubble’s observations of M51, see: This star chart for M51 represents the view from mid-northern latitudes for the given month and time. Scientists may have seen the first planet orbiting a star outside of our galaxy. Its diameter measures 60,000 light-years. A possible Saturn-sized planet identified in the distant Whirlpool Galaxy could be the first exoplanet to be detected outside the Milky Way.From a report: The exoplanet candidate appears to be orbiting an X-ray binary -- made up of a normal star and a collapsed star or black hole -- with its distance from this binary roughly equivalent to the distance of Uranus from the sun. Scientists may have seen the first planet orbiting a star outside of our galaxy. The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, in X-ray and optical light. Spotting a planet in another galaxy is hard, and even though astronomers know that they should exist, no planetary systems outside of the Milky Way have been confirmed so far. After a painstaking research effort combing through thousands of signals, a team led by Rosanne Di Stefano of the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has determined that a huge dip in X-ray light from the Whirlpool Galaxy is best explained by an extragalactic planet. Exoplanets are defined as planets outside of our Solar System. A galaxy is a huge group of gas, stars, dust, and rocks that are held together through gravity. It is far too faint to see with the naked eye, but not hard to find in the sky with a telescope - it lies a little to the south and west of Alkaid, the tail- star of Ursa Major. 269. It's incredible enough that 4,863 extrasolar planets have been discovered since the first two were detected in January 1992. A team of astronomers believes it might have detected the first planet beyond our Milky Way, in another galaxy far away. The Whirlpool galaxy has a radius of 30,000 light years. This system of seven rocky worlds–all of them with the potential for water on their surface–is an exciting discovery in the search for life on other worlds. A galaxy is defined as a collection of dust and gas, along with the trillions of stars out there and the planets that orbit them. Andromeda Facts. The arms of the Whirlpool galaxy have also been distorted. • At the heart of the Whirlpool Galaxy is a supermassive black hole, similar to the one found at the center of the Milky Way. The Whirlpool’s black hole is encircled by rings of dust that are constantly forming new stars. The activity is high enough for astronomers to classify the Whirlpool as a Seyfert galaxy. This might not sound like a lot, but when you think of all we know about our own solar system – 8 planets, hundreds of moons and hundreds of thousands or even millions of different objects. If confirmed, it will be the first time a planet has been detected outside the Milky Way. But the evidence is far too weak to conclude "planet." Exoplanets are planets found outside of our Solar System. To date, all other exoplanets have been discovered in the Milky Way, most of them within 3,000 light-years of Earth. Galaxies come in a lot of shapes and sizes, and our Milky Way is called a large barred spiral galaxy. DSC_0653
