In the past, aspheric lenses were extremely difficult to manufacture. Advances in manufacturing … 1. varying slightly from an exactly spherical shape [adj] Medical Definition of Aspheric. Figure 2: Deviation of sample Qcon aspheric surface from a conic section. For the correction of astigmatism an aspheric ophthalmic lens has a single aspheric surface with rotational symmetry, and a toroidal surface which is not rotational symmetric. In addition, because the surface of an aspheric lens is designed and formed to effectively reduce aberration in specific applications, custom aspheric lenses make flexible solutions to complex problems. Definition of an Aspheric Surface. * Used in higher-quality optics and increasingly in consumer-grade optics to correct aberrations which would be otherwise impossible or need many more elements. Definition of Aspheric. For lenses with sphere power only, the optical differences between a "double aspheric" lens design and a single aspheric surface are negligible. Please see the aspherical lens definition page for more details on this optical type. 12) Spaced doublet. How to Select the Right Aspheric Lens for Fiber Coupling Another common use for aspheric lenses is to couple laser light into optical fibers. The smaller the focal length the greater the divergence ability. A: The High Definition Aspheric lens is an excellent choice of lens for emerging presbyopes, because you can add the plus power and still provide an excellent distance vision. This non spherical surface encompasses all kinds of lenses from aspheric, atoric, progressive, and aphakic. Aspheric lenses are rotationally symmetrical optics whose radius of curvature deviates radially from the center of the lens. The aspheric design gives you greater image resolution and an increased depth of focus. Also, because the average human eye has roughly +0.10D of spherical aberration (Thibos, Hong et al, 2002), an aspheric contact lens with 0.10D of SA would correct this. aspheric definition. • General guidelines, detailed here, recommend positioning the lens to collimate the light from the fast axis, which has the larger … 14) Fourth-order In photography, a lens assembly that includes an aspheric element is often called an aspherical lens. All Augen High Definition Lenses ® feature our patented Augen Aspheric / Double Aspheric technology, delivering the improved clarity and widescreen vision that consumers expect in a ‘high definition’ product. ... which is a unit of optic or lens power. Definition of aspheric : departing slightly from the spherical form especially in order to correct for spherical aberration an aspheric lens First Known Use of aspheric The basic optical principle is to create a single-elongated focal point to enhance the depth-of-focus, on the contrary to monofocal IOLs (in which light is focused on one single point) or MF IOLs (having 2 or 3 discrete points). This is done by the modification of the curvature of at least one surface in an aspherical manner. An aspheric lens or asphere (often labeled ASPH on eye pieces) is a lens whose surface profiles are not portions of a sphere or cylinder. When optical designers talk about optical lenses, they are either referring to a single lens element or an assembly of lens elements (Figure 1). Regarding optical design, the use of an aspherics allows the optical system to be reduced in size. Aspheric lenses are defined as lenses that are non-spherical. Aspheric lenses are great for reducing thickness and especially reducing eye distortion as seen from the outside, but aspheric is not a material, it’s a type of lens curvature. These lenses are also being applied to personal visual devices, most often glasses. 2. a contact lens with changing lens strength. Aspheric means a non spherical surface or lens, mostly in the optical sense it has come to mean parabolic curves. ‘The system uses a generalized aspheric optic element placed near the aperture stop of an optical instrument to produce these results.’ ‘Typically, the designer adds more lens elements or applies small perturbations to spherical shapes using aspheric surfaces.’ You can improve cosmetics if you judiciously control the distribution of asphericity between the front and back surfaces, which would be more likely with a "double aspheric" lens design. An aspheric lens is designed with less curvature than its traditional counterpart. The short answer: Anyone. The long answer: Aspheric lenses provide cosmetic benefits without compromising optical quality. However, they do not drastically improve optics. Individuals with strong farsighted prescriptions should choose aspheric lenses if they are concerned about the bulging appearance of the lens or the magnification of their eye. Augen High Definition Single Vision Lenses feature a patented double aspheric design that provides wide, clear, natural vision – regardless of prescription.. Augen HD Single Vision Lenses extend the benefits of asphericity to all prescriptions including hard-to-fill higher single vision Rx’s. Think: flatter and thinner. Varying slightly from sphericity and having only slight aberration, as a lens. 1. Deliver all-day comfort and consistently clear vision. So if all these lenses fall in the definition of an aspheric lens, how do we further define and differentiate aspheric lenses in all their forms. DEFINITION OF AN EDOF. Aspheric surfaces are powerful tools that combine the optical corrections of multiple lenses into a single element (Figure 1) and affect performance in ways that spherical optics cannot. As for spherical lenses, common aspheric lens mounting and alignment methods can be divided in two main categories: the drop-in assembly and the active alignment. aspheric. Pure HD are high definition soft clear aspheric lenses designed for clearer resolution and sharper contrast. An aspheric contact lens designed to correct for this induced SA should have zero SA irrespective of lens power (red line [#2] in Figure 3a). ¹ Source: wiktionary.com. aspheric. Convex spherical lens has a divergent effect on light. 2. As you will see throughout this article, while complicated in design and often difficult to manufacture, aspheric lenses solve many of the inherent issues found in standard spherical optics that are polished to the very limit of their theoretical performance. ASPH is an abbreviation of Aspherical Lens and is used by the manufacturer, Leica to denote lenses that contain an aspherical lens element. Some of those options include the following: Aspheric Lenses. The use of a spherical design makes best form lenses easier to manufacture than aspheric lenses (described on the Aspheric Lenses tab), reducing costs. Aspheric lenses are slimmer and help to minimize the edge thickness, particularly on high myopic prescriptions. ‘The system uses a generalized aspheric optic element placed near the aperture stop of an optical instrument to produce these results.’ ‘Typically, the designer adds more lens elements or applies small perturbations to spherical shapes using aspheric surfaces.’ We have developed a new method to design aspheric lenses. Our patented aspheric front surface designs are created from molds produced with our proprietary free-form process, ensuring each lens delivers the exact high definition … In fact, a standard lens and an aspheric lens can attain similar visual acuity but the aspheric lens will demonstrate superior contrast sensitivity upon testing. Simulation results are compared with results obtained with conventional optical design … Also, because the average human eye has roughly +0.10D of spherical aberration (Thibos, Hong et al, 2002), an aspheric contact lens with 0.10D of SA would correct this. Most aspheric lenses also are high-index lenses. Figure courtesy of Dr. Greg Forbes, source cited below Figure 3: Lithography lens with aspheric surfaces shown in red The Qcon form defines a surface that is characterized by the sag departure of the aspheric surface from a base conic. This increases sharpness, especially at wider apertures and reduces chromatic aberrations. The aspherical lens element has helped to improve the optical quality of camera lenses in recent years. See more. (əˈsfɛrɪk, eɪˈsfɛrɪk) noun. adj. The conventional technique is usually based on analytic definition of optical surfaces; in … Double aspheric lenses are a new type of lens designed for high minus prescriptions, where both surfaces of the lens are aspheric in design. ASPH Lens Definition. In both farsighted and nearsighted prescriptions, aspheric lenses provide a slimmer profile and minimize eye distortion without compromising optical quality. It’s now widely regarded as a mark of excellence. An aspheric lens in ophthalmic optics don't always have rotationally symmetric surfaces. The aspherical lens adopted to enhance the lens' focus is made of high -- transmission, low -- dispersion materials and features a nano -- scale, anti -- reflection coating. The other side is plano or convex. For example, aspheres can correct for the spherical aberration inherent in a traditional lens. The EDOF IOL, or extended range of vision IOL, is a new technology in the treatment of presbyopia-correcting lenses. The advanced aspheric lens design provides thin, lightweight and comfortable lenses with reduced eye magnification. 3.
