A theory stating that the earth's surface (lithosphere) is broken into large slabs of rock (plates) that are continually moving and interacting with each other. Mid-Ocean Ridges are mountains that form on the ocean floor and with a total length over forty thousand miles. The third type is transform boundaries, or boundaries where plates slide past each other, forming strong earthquakes. Geological features of Convergent Plate Boundaries. In basic terms, the earth's crust (lithosphere) is broken up into tectonic plates which float on a liquid mantle beneath and move due to convection currents producing features such as volcanoes, earthquakes, rift valleys and ocean trenches at plate boundaries. A San Andreas fault С. Мt. 1. This PowerPoint is a lesson, especially for grade 10 students and teachers. Earthquakes are a common feature associated with divergent plate boundaries and can occur by several processes including: magma making its way through the brittle lithosphere, movement along transform featurex, divergence or normal faulting as the plates spread apart and cooling, and contraction of the lithosphere as it moves away from the ridge. These boundaries can be found on continental or oceanic lithospher e. Tensional stress operates between the tectonic plates at a divergent boundary, which causes the lithosphere at these locations to stretch and pull apart. Plate Tectonics - Learning Outcomes; 2. Himalayas D. Rift Valley 14. Some divergent boundaries are on the ocean floor where the lithosphere is thin; others are on land. In this lesson, we will be focusing our attention to Divergent Boundaries. This lesson will . What geologic features are formed through each type of plate boundaries? Other articles where divergent plate boundary is discussed: earthquake: Tectonic associations: …oceanic ridges, which correspond to divergent plate boundaries. Along the Horn of Africa, the African plate is tearing itself into what is sometimes called the Nubian plate (to the west, including most of the current African plate) and the Somali plate (to the east, including the Horn of Africa and the western Indian . Elizabeth Johnson. Most seismic activity occurs at three types of plate boundaries—divergent, convergent, and transform. 21.12). Oceanic crust divergent plate boundary features: new oceanic crust. The Earth's crust is pulled apart to create a new pathway for rising hot magma to flow on to the surface. Now come to the main point: Geological Features When two oceanic plate diverge then new sea floor is created by a process called sea floor spreading and features like Mid oceanic ridges, volcanoes & Young lava flows forms. Divergent Boundary. Khan Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Compare rift valley from mid-ocean ridge. Chapter 10 Plate Tectonics. In the western part of the continent, divergent plate boundary forces are beginning to rip the continent apart, forming the Basin and Range Province and its adjacent eastern arm, known as the Rio Grande Rift. The vast majority of divergent boundaries are found in the ocean, where they were not mapped or understood until the mid-to-late 20th century. Plate tectonics begin at mid-oceanic ridges where plates are moving apart.Because plates pull apart from each other at divergent plates, lava spews out to create the youngest geological rocks on Earth.. Another example of a divergent plate is at the African major plate where it's in the process of rifting apart into two . East Pacific Rise, Mid-Adlantic Ridge. Created by Sal Khan.Watch the next lesson: https://www.khanacademy.org/science/cosmolog. The East African Rift is an example of a single tectonic plate being ripped in two. At divergent boundaries, sometimes called constructive boundaries, lithospheric plates move away from each other. Deep ocean trenches, volcanoes, island arcs, submarine mountain ranges, and fault lines are examples of features that can form along plate tectonic boundaries. Plate Boundaries 1. And in particular, I want to focus on the features we see at divergent plate boundaries, where the plates are moving away from each other, or where new . In plate tectonics, a divergent boundary or divergent plate boundary (also known as a constructive boundary or an extensional boundary) is a linear feature that exists between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other. 14 What features would you expect to find at an ocean ocean divergent plate boundary? 32 Geologic Structures and Plate Tectonics . Tectonic plates move slowly and steadily. Himalayas B. Sierra Madre D. Great Rift Valley of East Africa 13. Most divergent plate boundaries are underwater and form submarine mountain ranges called oceanic spreading ridges. Which two features are commonly found at divergent plate boundaries? The Marianas Trench is an example of a trench formed by the convergence of two oceanic plates. Plate Tectonics -- Geological Features of Divergent Plate Boundaries. Divergent boundaries (constructive boundaries or extensional boundaries) occur where two plates slide apart from each other. At zones of ocean-to-ocean rifting, divergent boundaries form by seafloor spreading, allowing for the formation of new ocean basin. As the ocean plate splits, the ridge forms at the spreading center, the ocean basin expands, and finally, the plate area increases causing . 3. Before we go into possible theories as to why plates actually move, what I want to do in this video is think a little bit about why we see the geological features we do see at plate boundaries. What process occurs along divergent plate boundary? Plate Tectonics -- Geological Features of Divergent Plate Boundaries. system is a giant undersea mountain range, and is the largest geological feature on Earth; at 65,000 km long and about 1000 km wide, it covers 23% of Earth's surface (Figure 4.5.1). Réponse publiée par: nila93 Subduction is a geological process that takes place at convergent boundaries of tectonic plates where one plate moves under another and is forced to sink due to high gravitational potential energy into the mantle. Basalt is both fluid and dry (low volatile content) Therefore, non-explosive. Divergent boundaries. Convergent boundaries form strong earthquakes, as well as volcanic mountains or islands, when the sinking oceanic plate melts. •The word, tectonic, refers to the deformation of At a convergent plate boundary, one plate dives ("subducts") beneath the other, resulting in a variety of earthquakes and a line of volcanoes on the overriding plate; Transform plate boundaries are where plates slide laterally past one another, producing shallow earthquakes but little or no volcanic activity. underwater volcanoes. The rising current pushes up on the bottom of the lithosphere, lifting it and flowing laterally beneath it. When plates collide with each other = Convergent boundary 2. What are the Geological features of divergent? As the plates move past each other, they sometimes get caught and pressure builds up. Volcanoes are one kind of feature that forms along convergent plate boundaries, where two tectonic plates collide and one moves beneath the other. . Unlike convergent boundaries, divergence occurs between only oceanic or only continental plates, not one of each. Deep ocean trenches, volcanoes, island arcs, submarine mountain ranges, and fault lines are examples of features that can form along plate tectonic boundaries. Divergent plate boundaries form other unique geological, chemical and biological features described in more detail, below. Watch this video to learn about plate tectonic stresses and types . 3. After carefully reading this chapter, completing the exercises within it, and answering the questions at the end, you should be able to: Discuss some of the early evidence for continental drift and Alfred Wegener's role in promoting this theory. The Nazca Plate contains several very noticeable hotspots that have helped create numerous interesting geologic features. When the plates finally give and slip due to the increased pressure, energy is released as seismic waves, causing the ground to shake. 19 What are the types . deep-sea vents. Each of these plate boundaries has the potential to create different geological features. 15 Which rocks Cannot be metamorphosed? In the Seafloor Spreading Theory, we have studied how divergent boundaries below the oceans are responsible for the spreading of the seafloor. Deep ocean trenches, volcanoes, island arcs, submarine mountain ranges, and fault lines are examples of features that can form along plate tectonic boundaries. Of course, divergent plate boundaries also exist on land. Why are mountains formed along a continental-continental convergent boundary? The deep sea trenches are the narrow and elongated features which is having deeper depth at subduction zone. The Geological features that are associated with convergent plate boundaries are Mountains, Trenches, Island Arcs, Volcanoes & Terranes. Which of the following geologic features formed in the divergent plate boundary? This type of boundary tends to produce a diffuse zone of activity. 15 What geologic feature is formed between the divergent oceanic plates? The major difference between different types is what type of plate the divergent boundary is between. What geologic features formed when two plates moved away from each other? Ex. Two plate diverge along oceanic ridges where new lithosphere is created. Which of the following geologic features formed in the divergent plate boundary? See Answer. A hotspot is a place in the mantle where magma seems to more easily propagate from melting rock, despite it not being a plate boundary. It is the structure and geological processes of divergent boundaries that shape the continents and oceans over time by forming new crust and new . Geological Features of Divergent Plate Boundaries; 8. What geologic features formed when two plates moved away from each other? This extension is caused by rising convectional currents from the . Magma rises from deep within the Earth and erupts along these boundaries, forming a new crust on the lithosphere. Mid-Ocean Ridges are the geological features that occur at divergent boundaries. Transform faults occur where two plates are pushing against each other at a close to a 180 degree angle. 12. 13 What is a divergent boundary in plate tectonics?
