Ice builds on Lake Michigan along the shore at Newport State Park in Wisconsin, Feb. 15, 2021. Scientists will venture onto frozen surfaces of Lake Michigan and other Great Lakes this month to collect frigid water samples in a wide-ranging quest for information about ways that climate change is affecting the lakes and creatures that live in them. Ensure climate science information, including regional climate modeling data related to the Great Lakes Basin, is available to decision makers in Great Lakes communities to support planning. Great Lakes ice cover has declined steadily since … The date of the beginning of summer varies according to climate, tradition, and culture. Significant changes to physical properties of the lakes, including ice cover, water temperature, and evaporation from the lake surface, have profound implications for the climate of the Great Lakes region. In this capacity, GLERL obtains, produces, and delivers environmental data and products for near real-time observation … While that might boost the cargo shipping industry, the results for lake ecology are unknown. In addition to stirring up snowy weather and freezing the Great Lakes, the winds can create features that look like long white highways across the sky. Nearly all scientific sampling of the Great Lakes is done between May and October, when the lakes are free of ice and the water is warmer. Much of the weather and climate experienced by communities in the Great Lakes is driven by the seasonal behavior of the lakes. Featured image: Ice builds on Lake Michigan along the shore at Newport State Park in Wisconsin, Feb. 15, 2021. Bar labels indicate the end year of the winter; for example, 1963-1972 indicates the winter of 1962-1963 through the winter of 1971-1972. Climate change will also exacerbate a range of risks to the Great Lakes. Southwest. The areas that saw the highest coverages during the winter of 2021 were Green Bay off of Lake Michigan, Saginaw Bay, North Channel, and Georgian Bay off of Lake Huron, Apostle Islands and Thunder Bay in Lake Superior, Lake St. Clair, Western Lake Erie, and the 10,000 islands area of eastern Lake Ontario. These trends could relate in part to an earlier thawing of winter ice (see the Lake Ice indicator). Recent increases in water temperature have mostly been driven by warming during the spring and summer months (see Figure 2). But this month, scientists from more than a dozen U.S. and Canadian institutions will brave the elements to sample all five Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair in a first-of-its-kind coordinated campaign called the Winter Grab. Current Ice Cover Conditions Coastwatch and GLSEA. Increased heat, drought and insect outbreaks, all linked to climate change, have increased wildfires. Since 1995, average surface water temperatures have increased slightly for each of the Great Lakes (see Figure 2). One reason for growing interest in winter's effects on the lakes is how winter itself is changing. Great Lakes ice cover has declined steadily since … Russia - Russia - Climate: Several basic factors determine Russia’s variable climates. Extreme heat, heavy downpours and flooding will affect infrastructure, health, agriculture, forestry, transportation, air and water quality, and more. The Great Lakes, also called the Great Lakes of North America or the Laurentian Great Lakes, is a series of large interconnected freshwater lakes in the mid-east region of North America that connect to the Atlantic Ocean via the Saint Lawrence River. They are Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario and are in general on or near the Canada–United States border. One reason for growing interest in winter’s effects on the lakes is how winter itself is changing. One reason for growing interest in winter’s effects on the lakes is how winter itself is changing. One reason for growing interest in winter’s effects on the lakes is how winter itself is changing. Estimated Great Lakes Ice Cover & Thickness 2021-2022. Figure 2.27: Bars show decade averages of annual maximum Great Lakes ice coverage from the winter of 1962-1963, when reliable coverage of the entire Great Lakes began, to the winter of 2012-2013. Great Lakes scientists are heading out onto the ice this winter to learn more about one of the largest freshwater ecosystems on the planet. Researchers now think more is going on in the bitter depths of the Great Lakes than previously believed — including activity influenced by climate change. Mid-winter in North America often brings blasts of cold wind blowing south from the Arctic or the Canadian interior. Great Lakes ice cover has declined steadily since … Summer is the hottest of the four temperate seasons, occurring after spring and before autumn. At or centred on the summer solstice, the earliest sunrise and latest sunset occurs, daylight hours are longest and dark hours are shortest, with day length decreasing as the season progresses after the solstice. The country’s vast size and compact shape—the great bulk of the land is more than 250 miles (400 km) from the sea, while certain parts lie as much as 1,500 miles (2,400 km) away—produce a dominance of continental regimes. CoastWatch is a nationwide National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) program within which the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) functions as the Great Lakes regional node. Great Lakes ice cover has declined steadily since the 1970s and some projections indicate it could become scarce later this century. Scientists will venture onto frozen surfaces of Lake Michigan and other Great Lakes this month to collect frigid water samples in a wide-ranging quest for information about ways that climate change is affecting the lakes and creatures that live in them.
